MHA # 2 | Tuesday Evening

Yesterday was a...success? If one could call beating the shit out of a guy in a stupid looking uniform a success. It hadn't really done a lot to make Diego feel better overall, but at least he felt like he did something other than sit there twiddling his thumbs.

Now he really didn't have much to do until class on Friday (where he was determined not to go down so easily next time!), so he was having a quiet evening in with American Ninja Warrior on TV and a protein shake because his cooking skills were non-existent and that counted as dinner.

"I mean," Annie said, having to smile, "I didn't exactly mean to this time."

And yes, she remembered how bad she'd freaked out on him back in January when he'd gotten shot and he hadn't meant to, either.

"But yes, I'll be careful." Unless the choice was between being doing the (stupid) right thing and being careful. Then it was dumb bravery, all the way.

Well, turnabout and all that. He technically also couldn't say anything about any dumb bravery she might be doing in the near future.

"Good," he said, reaching out to lightly touch the spot on her stomach where she had been hit. "Anything I can do for you now?"

He would at least do what he could from here, since Homelander hadn't figured out a way to stalk them across universes yet.

"Well," Annie said, thinking about it and shifting very slightly under his touch -- the welts didn't really hurt unless you pressed on them, and mostly Annie was just sort of struck by the novelty of being hurt at all. "I think it's all handled back in New York for now, so...just this?"

Like, just being here was already so good for her, in terms of calming herself down and sorting out her thoughts.

"Look at that," she added. "It's your turn to dote and make a big deal of my injuries and stuff."

It really didn't happen often! And as an added bonus, she would probably be a little less shouty next time he was hurt, too.

“It is my turn, isn’t it?” he said. “If I recall correctly you didn’t let me work out for a week.”

"That seems excessive," Annie decided, like a total hypocrite.

To be fair, she wasn't even bleeding.

“I thought so too at the time,” he teased. “It’s okay, we’ll do yoga.”

That actually worked out pretty well the last time.

"And by doing yoga you mean we'll have sex on the floor again?"

Because she was, like, super up for that part of the recovery process.

(Emotional devastation was a thing, yes, but so was distracting herself from it while she could.)

“Probably.” Well at least he was realistic about it.

Annie smiled, full and real and without hesitation.

"And hey, you don't have to cauterize me," Annie pointed out, sliding her hand down to trace her fingers along his neck. "So we get to skip the super-painful part."

She still kind of felt bad about it every time she spotted the scar on his arm.

It was a cool scar!

“That’s very true,” Diego said, running his hand up her side. “How are you feeling now?”

"Mostly fine," she said honestly, peeking down at herself again. (It was honest as long as she continued with the assumption that this was how she felt physically, of course.) "I mean, they kinda sting and it hurts more if I put pressure on them at all? The worst part was how hard it threw me -- I haven't had the wind knocked out of me like that, like...since I took tae kwon do as a kid?"

But, you know, as far as being shot with a fifty-cal round went, it was probably a preferable outcome.

“That was probably their intention,” he said. “So it hurts when you put pressure on them? Guess I’m going to have to be really careful when I’m doting on you.”

"Very gentle doting," Annie said, smiling. "I mean, if you'll recall, I wanted to sleep on the couch, I was so gentle in my doting on you."

She hadn't, because...you know. She had no willpower sometimes.

“You think I should sleep on the couch tonight?” he asked, lifting an eyebrow.

"I do not, and I will tackle you and drag you back to bed if you try," Annie informed him, shaking her head.

Which, like, as soon as she said it, she realized did not sound much like a disincentive.

“That wouldn’t help the healing process very much,” Diego laughed, leaning down for a kiss.

Annie reached up to cup his face, just because she was feeling a little clingy with all of this.

"You don't know. You're not a doctor," she murmured. Maybe it would help!

“Just a feeling I have,” he teased before kissing her again. He shifted slightly, moving closer but not settling on top of her like he normally would.

Annie sighed softly, running her hand along his arm and rising up a little to meet him. "Then don't make me tackle you," she said, like that was the obvious and logical conclusion. "Just stay in bed with me while I heal for a little bit."

And touch her as much as physically possible without hurting her in the process, please, because that was where Annie was at right now.

"I can do that," he murmured. "Come on, let's go to bed. We can do yoga in the morning."

"Okay," Annie agreed, even if she was already fully intending to not be here in the morning, as much as she wanted to just stay. It felt like tempting fate to assume Homelander wouldn't notice if she was gone a couple of days without some kind of explanation.

But for right now, she really needed to be comforted and to just kind of decompress from the onslaught of trauma that had been her life lately, so she carefully pushed herself up off the couch and reached for Diego's hand. "Bed it is. I'm entrusting my care to your very capable hands, here."

"Well you haven't seen me play nurse yet," he joked, taking her hand and helping her up. "I could be really bad at it."

"To your as-yet-unproven hands, then," Annie amended lightly, standing and taking the opportunity to kiss him again.

"Better," he said, lightly placing his hands on her waist. "It's less pressure on me."

"I'll tell you a secret," Annie murmured, going up on her toes a little. "I'm already feeling better, so maybe you're good at this."

Nurse Diego apparently mostly just needed to medicate her with kisses, though a dose of Not Dealing With My Nightmare Life For A Minute would also not go amiss.
