An Umbrella Factory | Night

Diego wasn't the only one with some underlying dread when it came to seeing their father in the flesh again. But they couldn't really stop now with yet another apocalypse coming on fast.

"This is it," Five said, looking at the building like there should be some kind of obvious sign of Sir Reginald.

Diego

"You okay?" He was asking both Five and himself, really.

Maybe they should have called first.

Five

And lose the element of surprise?

"Yeah. Fine." Ah, the classic Hargreeve's reaction. "It's just..."

Diego

It's just the most awkward and weirdly scary thing in the world? Yeah, Diego got that.

Finding the doors locked, Diego knelt down, pulling out a knife to pick the lock. "So, what, aside from the time we saw his ghost this'll be the first time you've seen the old man in...how long?"

Five

"Forty-five years," Five replied, not immediately just teleporting in to unlock it for him because they were sort of having a moment here.

Diego

And whatever kept him from talking about Kennedy, right?

Diego gave a low whistle. "That's a trip."

Five

That too, yes.

"No kidding," Five said with a little huff. "You know, when I was out there, stuck in the apocalypse, there wasn't a day that went by where I didn't hear his voice in my head."

Wasn't that just the very definition of hell?

Diego

Diego frowned. "What was he saying?"

He kiiiinda had a guess of what it was. Some psychologist out there was dying to write a paper on their family about shared trauma.

Five

That shrink would go nuts mid-way through the process.

"'I told you so.'"

Diego

Yup, that had been his guess.

"Well if Dad's here, he's never met you before," Diego said. "So he can't say 'I told you so'."

Five

"I'm sure he'll find a way." This was their father, after all.

Five finally got tired of watching Diego fumble with the lock-pick as he teleported inside to simply unlock it from there.

Diego

Diego sighed, only feeling like an idiot for a couple of seconds. "Right. Gotta remember that."

He look the lead to avoid seeing any smug look on Five's face, leading them down a dark hallway until he spotted an official looking office. There was a feeling of disappointment when the flicked the light on to find...just a boring old office.

"Shit, guess Dad didn't care much about home decor in here." Where were the portraits and dead animals?

Five

"This feels like a front," Five said, unable to explain that feeling any further than that.

Dad had been very good at secrets and knowing things he shouldn't rightly know in retrospect.

Diego

"A front for what?" Diego asked. Like, he was all for Dad being a shady creep, but he couldn't think of what an umbrella factory would be a front for.

Five

Well, he was the one insisting Dad was part of the Kennedy assassination, take a guess!

"I don't know." But he'd figure it out.

Diego

"Okay. Well, I'll take left," he said. "Yell if, uh, you get in trouble."

Look at him, trying to be Number Two and responsible.

Five

Which was just utterly adorable if you asked Five. But he graciously nodded with only a little of that 'lol, really?' on his face. Because they had a task at hand here.

And absolutely nothing in this building was making the 'this is a front' idea any less valid as he came across locked doors and Dolores' people a set up of what looked like a 1950's mannequin family watching the nuclear apocalypse on TV.

"What are you up to?" Five asked quietly, like he'd get an answer to that just by asking it of the universe at large. But the real answers he found were just more confusing as, at a desk, he managed to snag an invitation for their father to a gala at the Mexican Consulate here in the city.

Which was when he finally heard the noise of something non-Diego related moving.

bbPogo

Something smaller and more Pogo shaped, in fact. Though he was much younger of course and missing the normal amount of clothing. But it was still Pogo slowly knuckling his way to investigate Five.

Five

Which was kind of a relief to see after everything that had happened.

"Pogo, hi," Five said with a little sigh as he kneeled down to greet the chimp. Who still seemed friendly even if it wasn't the one who had helped raise them just yet. "It's all right little buddy. Pogo, it's... it's good to see you."

bbPogo

And it was nice! Up until Pogo decided that he had no idea who this overly familiar kid was in this building and scratched at his neck with a shriek before running to the window to get the hell out of there.

Because the past was extra awful and you needed to know that, Five.

Five

Everything was awful, really.

Five clutched at the scratch on his neck, following after the chimp until Pogo jumped through the glass and out onto the ground. "Diego!"

Well, you did say to shout, you know.

Diego

Meanwhile, Diego was off finding his own dead ends. He ended up in a dusty office with important looking files in them...only they were filled with blank papers. Maybe Five was right, and this was an elaborate front for...something.

The sound of a door opening had Diego sneaking back into the hall, just in time to see a fedora and trenchcoat and a hat sneaking out of the building. So. That was suspicious as fuck, of course he was going to follow him.

Diego managed to track the guy down to an empty warehouse but when he pushed the doors open he found that the mysterious guy was nowhere to be seen.

Mystery Man

Diego was nowhere near as sneaky as he thought he was. The man had quickly figured out he was being followed and hid up in the rafters of the warehouse until the right dramatic moment, then made himself known by jumping to the ground landing with a soft thump behind Diego.

And then follow that up with trying to punch him in the face.

Diego

Okay, that was kind of a cool move. But still, an attack was an attack and Diego was gonna be Diego so he pulled a knife out and whipped it at the guy.

Not to kill him. Just to maim him a bit.

Mystery Man

Nice try, but he'd have to do better than that. The guy leaned back to dodge the knife as it whizzed by, eventually embedding itself into a wooden column.

Diego

"Impressive." Which meant that Diego now had the green light not to go easy on the guy. He went on the offensive, trying to get a shot in on the guy to subdue him.

It'd be nice to figure out who the hell he was trying to hurt.

Mystery Man

The man countered every hit Diego threw at him with a weird amount of grace. Eventually he managed to get a solid hit on Diego and got him into a chokehold.

He'd kind of like to know he was choking out, as well.

Diego

Diego broke free of the hold, creating enough space between the two of them to give himself time to grab a piece of rebar that was sticking out of the ground. And to show that he too had sweet moves, made his way back to the mysterious man by way of a backflip that no normal person could manage.

He allowed only a second to be smug about that before attacking the guy with the rebar.

Uh oh look who it is

The man had clearly been thrown off by the display, enough to be hit by the rebar several times. Eventually he ended up on one knee, which is when what little light the warehouse had hit his face.

Diego

Diego froze, rebar still held up in the air from when he had been preparing to finish the guy off. "Dad?"

Reginald

Whatever the hell that meant. Reginald took the chance to pull a knife out of his pocket, stabbing Diego right in the stomach.

Reginald took a second to enjoy the shocked look on the other man's face. "Amateur."

Diego

Great, killed by his own father and roasted at the same time. Diego dropped the rebar as the shock and pain settled in.

He managed to stay up for a few more seconds before everything went dark and he passed out. He didn't even get to see Reginald call Pogo to his side and disappearing into the night.

Five

Diego couldn't complain about the teleport spamming because the idiot had been stabbed. Hopefully everyone was prepared for his very sudden appearance at Elliot's apartment with a bleeding Diego.

Because that's where they were at.

"Little help."

Annie

Annie had succumbed to allowing Lila to also paint her toenails -- she was good with her usual pink manicure on her fingernails, thanks -- but she was gonna smear the varnish everywhere with how fast she moved at Five's entrance.

Though, really, it wasn't Five that had her moving so fast. "Fucking shit, Five, what did you do?" she demanded, hurrying over to get a hand on Diego's wrist immediately.

Pulse. Thank God.

Lila

Lila, who could see from here that he wasn't dead (and even if he had been, that could probably get figured out, anyway), took a more leisurely approach. "Did you stab him?" she asked Five conversationally, as though she wouldn't much have blamed him if he had.

Five

Five rolled his eyes at both of them. "Please. If I'd stabbed him, I would have aimed somewhere less fatal."

Yes, just a flesh wound between siblings.

Annie

Annie, meanwhile, was just going to go ahead and get a hand on Diego's wound, pressing down to keep pressure on it. "I can cauterize this," she decided, gingerly trying to get a look at the wound without disturbing Diego as she pushed his shirt up. "It's gonna hurt like a bitch, though."

Maybe he'd stay passed out through it?

Lila

"If not you, who?" Lila asked Five, flicking her gaze up from where Annie was working. Seemed taken care of -- the stabber was a more pressing concern to her than the be-stabbed.

Five

"Our father."

Ah, just another day for the Hargreeves.

"Be useful and go get bandages," Five told Lila because he didn't have to be polite to people he didn't trust. Also, Diego was unconscious and couldn't make him.

Annie

That was a bridge too far for Annie to deal with right now. Diego was bleeding. Diego took precedence over the immediate rage she felt, and how she wanted to run out there and give Reginald Hargreeves a piece or seven of her mind, again.

"I'm gonna get him onto the bed," Annie decided, gently slipping an arm around Diego's shoulders and under his knees. "And his clothes are coming off, so once we've got bandages, maybe a little privacy so I can work on him, okay?"

Over in...Elliot's bed. Sorry for the probable blood on your sheets, Elliot.

Lila

"I'll avert my delicate eyes," Lila said sarcastically, sauntering off towards the bathroom since it seemed the most likely home for bandages.

Five

That pose would be hilaaaarious later.

Five touched his neck again and made a face instead. "It was one of Diego's knives. So, obviously they fought."

And dad had won. While Sir Reginald had trained them, he hadn't exactly been known to do any of that work himself. Which made this all new information.

Annie

With Diego breathing and warm and clearly still alive in her arms, Annie could focus on other things, finally.

"Did he get you, too?" she asked Five, nodding to his scratches as she moved easily to her feet and handled Diego like he weighed about as much as a toddler.

Five

"Pogo," Five replied, getting out of her way, but following along. "I allowed myself some nostalgia and well..."

Annie

"Pogo's here?" That actually made sense, even if Annie hadn't even considered the possibility. She would her way through the apartment, lightly kicking open a door she was hoping was a bedroom in spite of the frosted glass windows. Success, whoo. "But why would he attack you?"

Pogo used a cane and had kind of a refined way of speaking and wore a little suit, right?

Five

"Remember what year we're in here," Five replied. "Pogo is an adolescent chimpanzee. He's not the one who helped raise us all. Not anymore than our father is... well, our father right now."

Annie

"I dunno, Five. Looks like your dad's still the asshole we know," Annie commented softly, going to set Diego on the bed so she could get a better look at his stomach. "Though maybe he calmed down some in his old age."

Since yeah, Diego would have mentioned it if he'd grown up being physically assaulted by his own father.

(And Annie would have actually killed him.)

Five

Five shot her a look that implied she was missing the point. "That man would never mellow, but if that makes you feel better about it..."

Annie

"He does not seem like the mellowing type, but I was pretty sure he never stabbed any of you guys," she replied, sliding a hand down along Diego's side in a gentle-but-clinical motion until she found what she was looking for, and slipped her hand into a pocket to retrieve a knife.

And that was when Lila reappeared, holding roll of bandages and eyeing that knife with interest, and Annie decided she needed to make the call now. "Everyone out," she said, shooing at both Five and Lila with her free hand before moving to start cutting Diego's shirt off with the knife. "I'll let you know if I need anything. Screaming's normal if you hear it."

Reassuring!

Five

Five looked at Lila to get out first. All so he could keep an eye on her.

He was just so friendly, right?

Lila

Lila, who was none-too-subtly craning her neck to try to look, gave a little huff and threw up her hands.

"Fine, I'll miss the show," she sighed, leading the way out as though this was a huge sacrifice. "Let's see what Elliot's got in his fridge."

Five

"Let's," Five said in that one bitchy tone that said he was trying, but not actually trying at all to be nice. So he could make a beeline immediately to the coffee.

Elliot did a great job on this roast.
