No, nothing happened to me on Tuesday.

*chittering*

Nothing at all.

Up at the School, the Long Con was about watching your watches, Creative Writing wanted to know people's Spring Break plans, and Glitter! made cupcakes. Arden had safety snacks in the Library, which she possibly shared with Caleb and Gray

The Dorms continued to be quiet, while in Town, Gray wouldn't start at Over Easy until he was sure there'd be no singing, while Adrian was 'grumpy' at Pick Your Poison, at least until Rey showed up and he was mysteriously not so grumpy.

Finally! As much as Liliana adored talking about mana philosophies, she was also quite excited to finally get to move into teaching new material: mana pairs. Today, when class entered the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves high up on a rooftop in a bustling city. No, not Ravnica (but great guess!), Insomnia. Rather than pillows and cushions, there were scattered tables and chairs set up under a string of the so-called 'fairy lights' (they had nothing to do with faeries at all, Liliana had checked), though the omnipresent whiteboard was, once again, omnipresent. Drawn on it were five different symbols in a circle: a sun, a droplet, a skull, a flame, and a tree.

Wealth is power--and you can ABSOLUTELY take it with you--Orzhov Syndicate )

The corner of her lips curled a bit. "But before you decide that black and white mana is bad guys all the way down, there are a number of positive qualities that go along with this pairing. The first is unwavering discipline, the result of black's determination to succeed and white's absolute dedication to a cause. Relating to the shared patience I mentioned earlier, black and white demonstrate excellent stewardship, with a focus on long-term planning and incremental gain. Sure, strip mining an area bare of all its resources makes for fast profit, but that profit will eventually come to an end. Better to take care and ensure that your profit lasts forever. This relates to their shared concept of orderly self-interest. While black and white philosophy cares primarily - if not solely - for their in-group, they are aware that a rigid, organized, orderly system benefits everyone. The tide raises all boats, after all. And, of course, loyalty and devotion have already been mentioned, but deserve to be acknowledged again."

"Right then, we're going to skip back in time a bit, and start near the beginning. William Thompson was an American criminal and con artist whose deceptions caused the term 'confidence man' to be coined," John stated abruptly, once the bell rang. "So all of you aspiring con-artists can thank him for giving you a job title."

"Operating in New York City in the late 1840s, a genteely-dressed Thompson would approach an upper-class mark, pretending they knew each other, and begin a brief conversation. After initially gaining the mark's trust, Thompson would ask 'Have you confidence in me to trust me with your watch until tomorrow?' Upon taking the watch -- or, occasionally, money -- Thompson would depart, never returning the watch. This is because rich people are idiots, and it would have been considered 'rude' to refuse someone of their own social standing, and potentially caused a minor scandal if got out that they were scrooges."

"Thompson was arrested and brought to trial in 1849, in a case that made newspaper headlines across the country. The New York Herald, recalling his explicit appeals to the victim's "confidence," dubbed him the "confidence man." Per the Oxford English Dictionary, the first known use of the term was printed in The New Orleans Picayune. For those of you of the academic bent, the Thompson case was a major inspiration and source for Herman Melville's 1857 novel The Confidence-Man."

"So here's your assignment for today: grab a classmate or two and figure out what small-talk you need to make to get them to trust you. Think about what non-verbal cues you are looking for in people that let you steer the conversation, and give you the advantage you need to gain someone's confidence."

The class was in the Home Ec room today, where there were plenty of supplies on each station, plus glitter. So much edible glitter.

Don't be shocked, now.

"We're going pretty easy today," Kitty began. "We're making cupcakes. I've got a lot of different mixes and all the supplies, and the only rule is you need to use glitter. I don't care if it's in the batter, the frosting, or both. Just be creative and make them pretty. Or a monstrosity. Both are good."

It’s safe to talk again, in case any of you weren’t sure. No more singing. As far as I know.

*chittering*

I did not sing to anyone!

*chittering*

What do you mean you recorded it?

*the opening notes of Dude (I Totally Miss You) play before some scuffling sounds*

Right. Moving on. Notes from the school! Feeding Yourself 101 was canceled due to singing. Ethics discussed whether or not it was ethical to record someone singing. How coincidental, squirrels…

Nothing from the dorms, sorry Porg.

And now, the town. Pam was singing a bit at Pick Your Poison before Harley arrived. Caleb was at the Boardwalk. He sang as well. Jack seemed annoyed by having to sing at the Perk and later in the day he went to Caritas where Kitty had also been singing and they discussed the singing and caught up.

Lucifer was also dealing with singing at the Devil’s Nest, though trying not to. Gregorith arrived and he and Lucifer sang at each other though neither seemed to enjoy it. Octavia and Lucifer were also unhappy with the singing situation. At least it seems to be over.

And finally, Sairis was at the Infinite Consortium. Also singing. And threatening the chair but not threatening the chair musically.

Hopefully today is quieter for everyone. Less musical.

Gray arrived at Over Easy today on high alert.

"Is it safe?" Was anyone singing?

The dishwasher was humming a Bad Bunny song, did that count?

"People can't sing anyway when their mouths are full of waffles," Gray decided. They'd risk opening.

"Spring break's coming up," Isabela announced to the class, in the tone of someone who had been on a great many of them. "Which is proving inspiring."

"So it's a thing in many places to make kids write essays about what they did on their school vacations," Aphra said. "We're going to flip that around and make you write a story about what you're going to do on yours."

"Remember the name of the class," Isabela said. "No reasonable expectations needed."

Mark Adrian as another person who was quite glad to have hermitted away in his Grove yesterday. He'd thrown himself into prepping for the last of winter and the beginning of spring, including cutting a truly outrageous amount of firewood.

While singing. A lot of singing.

Today, his throat hurt and so did his arms and back, and Boston had, at various times, referred to his mood at 'grumpy,' 'brooding,' and once, even 'sulking.' Which, no he wasn't. He was just sore.

And also shut up.

Immediately after radio yesterday, Arden had vanished to her room and hid, refusing to talk to anyone (and, yes, spending plenty of time singing to herself). Today, she had ventured out to the library, replete with snacks and drinks just in case it seemed like it was starting up again and she needed to quickly cram her mouth full.

Overkill? Possibly. Worth it?

Definitely.

Sairis had no idea what all the singing was about today, or why the hell he was singing things he didn't even know, but whatever was going on, it didn't seem to be malicious.

It was just really annoying. Especially since singing about "whistling while you work" didn't do much good when you were terrible at whistling a tune.

He scowled at the chair. "Don't judge me, or I'll reupholster you. You'd look good in plain brown leather."

But the shop was open, even if it was musical today.

Kitty would have thought she'd have escaped the weirdness today, until she got to work and started setting up for the day.

"Closing time, one last call for alcohol
So, finish your whiskey or beer
Closing time, you don't have to go home
But you can't stay here

She got through the whole song and immediately stopped what she was doing. Maybe she didn't want to be at work today? Just maybe?

Anakin arrived in class looking a little hunted--a day devoted to singing when one's wife was not, say, musically gifted, was a bit of a trial before enough coffee was ingested. (And Rory's song about coffee had long and included inexplicable choreography.) "Hello," he said, choosing his words carefully.

Ahoksa had mostly been dealing with melancholy introspective pieces so far. "Sometimes, if you're unsure of a course of action, it pays to look outside of yourself."

"Today in particular let's you hear what mood you are sending into the universe," Anakin agreed.

"For example, if your actions are resulting in an ominous leitmotif." Some kind of military march with kettle-bells, maybe. "Then possibly it's not such a great idea."

Some people were just iconic, okay?

"And if you combine singing with some manner of horrifying romantic overture," Anakin added, "try to keep the object of you affection in mind. They might not be prepared for a huge declaration in, say, the middle of the road today."

"A huge, awkward declaration." Because when all was said and done, they were both space monks.

"So our ethical question is, should you bear witness to someone singing, should you record it or pretend like it didn't happen? Does it depend on the song?" Anakin asked.

"Do you respect their privacy and dignity?" There was a noticeably aghast silence from the bush that had totally always been in the corner of the room at the very idea. "Does your answer change if you like the person? If you don't like them?"

"You may push me around
But you cannot win
You may throw me down
But I'll rise again
The more you say
The more I defy you
So get out of my face!
"

The door slammed shut behind him.

The baristas - and what few customers were in this time of day - looked up at him, blinking.

Jack slowly lowered his arms and stuffed his hands into his pockets. "What are you looking at?" he said defensively. "Have you never been through singing day before? Congratulations!"

Everyone turned back to their beverages.

"You'd think at least now the place would let me sing my own karking songs," he grumbled, and walked up to the counter. "Woo! Yeah!"

Of all the days for this to hit, it would just have to be when he finally had a moment to stop by again, huh?

There were many Fandom events that just sort of passed Lucifer by. Sometimes because they couldn't touch their celestial nature. Sometimes because-- well, when you already spoke the truth and you were already prone to bursting out into song, did you really notice when the island made you slightly more prone to do so?

He hadn't been.

Until Father's little musical meltdown a few years ago.

"And I w-- No," he snapped, irritably. "No, no, no. No more musical-- no more, no more sweet music-- I swear to Me, Dad, if this is you again--"

Tiny, meanwhile, was behind the bar, doing a very faithful rendition of 'Cups' as he cleaned the. Well. Cups.

There was a song stuck in Pam's head. It hadn't been there when she left Gotham in the morning, but it had popped into her mind the moment she spotted the flowering plant sitting on a shelf by the bath products, and--

"So I'll continue to continue... to pretend, my life-- will never end..."

Ugh. What was that. Simon and Garfunkel? Oh well. She moved the plant on the shelf, to make sure it got more sunlight, and--

And flowers never bend with the rainfall..."

Oh well. She wasn't really a music person, but she supposed Harley must have been in some kind of mood that morning. Maybe she just hadn't noticed the radio?

Hey there Fandom, what up, it's ya girl Arden Finch here giving you all the information that you could want about yesterdays shenanigans. Now then, let's grab these these notes and buckle your seatbelts because--

All we hear is radio ga ga
Radio goo goo
Radio ga ga
All we hear is radio ga ga
Radio blah, blah
Radio, what's new?
Radio, someone still loves you

Oh. Oh [BLEEP]. Okay, island, we're interrupting your regular news to bring you this important news bulletin: Today is a singing day. I repeat, today is a singing day. Be very careful about who you see and talk to today because goddess only knows what you'll end up singing about.

Ooooooooooookaaaaaaaay, let's see how fast we can make this. We start with Schoooooooooool's out for summer! No it isn't! It's still winter! Augh! Anyway, we had Squirrel! meet at the Atlas gym and did some working out to help us focus. *long pause* Okay, didn't bust into a song about fitness or anything, cool. Then there was Beginning Gourmet Cooking-- *long pause* --where we learned about chocolate by going to the Swiss home of milk chocolate and holy [b][BLEEP] if that wasn't the best class ever.

*long pause* Okaaaaaay? Cool, no singing, let's move on to--

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's
Dirty looks...

Are the squirrels somehow in charge of this? Are they? Because this feels, like, hella targeted to drive me crazy. Anyway, no [Dorms] but in Town--

The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
I said, the boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town

*muffled screech* As I said, An. Y. Way, Caleb was lingering over his coffee at Furnado and--

'Cause I want to live like animals
Careless and free (like animals)
I want to live
I want to run through the jungle
The wind in my hair and the sand at my feet...

Well...not entirely wrong, but for [BLEEP]'s sake, island, can I PLEASE get through these last few notes? Okay? Okay! Vi! Magpie Emporium! Visited by Steph! Movie Theater 3000! Captain Barnes moved candy to discount bin! And last, Clinic! Professor James brought pizza! There! Fine! Done! We can all go--

I know that I can't take no more
It ain't no lie
I want to see you out that door
Baby, bye, bye, bye (bye, bye)
Don't wanna be a fool for you
Just another player in your game for two
You may hate me, but it ain't no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye (bye, bye)
Don't really want to make it tough
I just wanna tell you that I've had enough
It might sound crazy, but it ain't no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye

*door opening noise* [Bleep] this, I'm out. God all those songs are like a billion years old anyway, what the f-- *door slam*

Time came and went again. It was so much slower these days than Jack remembered it ever being, and yet so much faster. Music gigs, and work gigs, and just gigs, they passed on by at a rapid pace, slowing down towards the evenings and the mornings when he and Dane settled into a slow and comfortable routine.

Sitting here, it felt as if someone had hit the fast-forward button and life had rushed on past until it had suddenly stopped, jarring, in this tiny cramped burrito place buried in someone’s basement somewhere in Manhattan, blinking against the too-bright lights while Jill talked and the night slowed to a crawl outside. Like he was some kind of time traveler, lost out of time, staring at his–

Hand?

He really needed to stop philosophizing.

“Jack?” Jill said, doing her wise drummer-squint at him over the remains of her veggie burrito. “You doing okay there?”

“Yeah,” he said, and dropped his barbacoa-soaked mess into the sad little puddle of hot sauce at the bottom of his plate. “Sorry. I haven’t been sleeping enough lately, my head’s doing that thing where I lose track of the fabric of space-time completely. It’ll come back to me, I’m sure.”

Anyway, I think I want to see how the summer works out... )

"Last week, we began working with gelatin," Hannibal said when everybody met him at Portalocity. "We will work a bit further with it in future, but this week, we shall be working with something else interesting and topical - chocolate. And because there is only so much to teach about it without seeing where it comes from, we will have another field trip."

He waved them through the portal - to Maison Cailler.

"Welcome to Broc, Switzerland. Maison Cailler is Switzerland's oldest brand, and considered by many to be the original home of milk chocolate. We will have a tour here, followed by a class taught by one of their chocolatiers. It will last several hours, but I've arranged portals so you won't miss the rest of the day back home, either. So, please enjoy the history, smells, and tastes of chocolate, pay attention in the class, and then we'll have some time in their store before we head back to the island."
