Around Town | Late Thursday Morning

Okay, well, it had been pretty well established that patrolling the town was useless, but what else were people like Diego supposed to do? It had been hammered in his head since birth to take action, even if the efforts were futile.

Which probably also explained Five's determination to stop the apocalypse even though he had nothing to go on.

So, yeah. Walking around town yet again. For some reason. Maybe he'd find a hole to jump in.

"I think I have a couple back in the apartment," Steve said, and really, don't ask why, Annie. Steve was just paranoid that way. "Do you want to sweet talk the squirrels?"

"Probably better me than you or Diego," Annie said, practically. Also totally unsurprised that Steve had GoPros. Why wouldn't he? "We'll need a bunch of rum, probably?"

"Yeah," Steve said. "I used up my stash of plastic fake police badges on the raccoons yesterday."

So get ready for a lot of raccoons pretending to be cops, Annie. Steve hadn't thought that through.

At least that was a funny image, and Annie would take all the funny images she could get right now.

"Like for children?" she checked, actually smiling. "Did you teach them the Miranda warning?"

"Like for children," Steve confirmed. "They were very shiny?"

"They probably could have been yogurt lids and you'd achieve the same effect," Annie noted. "Do the squirrels like anything besides rum?"

Glitter, maybe?

"Gossip?" Steve said, making a face.

"What about fake gossip?" Annie suggested. "Maybe the squirrels would be interested in how, I don't know, you're the heir to a rubber hand factory and how Diego's actually a warlock but it's a secret."

Less 'gossip,' more 'soap opera plotline,' but sure.

"It's worth a try," Steve said, snorting.

"I'm running out of alternatives," Annie admitted. "What do you think about the idea of digging her own holes?"

Diego didn't seem to think it was a good idea (which, you know, if Annie thought about it, was kind of a sign that this one was a little nutty), but Annie was pretty close to writing a pro/con list regarding construction equipment rentals.

Steve wrinkled up his nose. "What if we hit someone? Or a sewer pipe? Or hit a sewer pipe and cover Rey in it?"

"Fair." See, Steve. This was why Annie didn't make plans. You knew it was bad when things got to the 'let Annie make plans' stage of things. "I mean, aren't there tools for that? Like...sonar, or something?"

This would be so much better if it was just stuff they could punch.

"Yes, but I'd need to call in a lot of favors," Steve said, frowning thoughtfully. "It'd take time."

"We'll call it Plan Y," Annie suggested. "Plan Z is trying to get Diego's brother here to figure out if everyone's dead."

And her backhoe plan was so dumb it hadn't even warranted a letter earlier, so Plan Y was an upgrade.

"Though, like," she added, "I do wonder if a regular telepath might be able to tell?" But again, she only knew, like, one psychic person, and she was kind of a new friend so Annie didn't want to call in favors just yet.

Steve winced immediately at the "everyone's dead" bit, then tried to pretend like he hadn't.

"I don't know any telepaths," Steve said. "...I don't think."

Yeah, that was why it was Plan Z. (That and how they'd have to fish Klaus out of wherever he was and probably dry him out a bit, first.)

"I know at least one," Annie admitted thoughtfully. "Maybe I'll see if she can, like...sense people or whatever. 'Cause like, we don't even know if they're still on the island, technically."

"If they were anywhere with cell reception, Danny would've called to yell at me," Steve said with absolute certainty.
