Hargreeves Mansion | Night

You know, for a scrawny kid, Five was a lot heavier than he looked. Even with Allison holding on to his legs Diego was still struggling to get him through the door. "Damn it..."

Allison

Allison grunted as she tried to do her part to get Five through the door. "We should have gone to the hospital."

Diego

"A kid with a shrapnel wound might raise some questions." Unless this hospital was super chill.

Allison

"Yeah, well, so does the murder shrine in Harold Jenkins' attic." Which they all needed to have a discussion about, by the way, because what the fuck.

Diego

Diego frowned. "He's still losing blood, what do we do?"

Allison

"We get the shrapnel out." Listen, she had played a doctor in enough movies to know that's what you don't do, typically, but if they weren't going to the hospital they had to do something. They couldn't just leave it there.

Diego

That sounded like a terrible idea, Allison. But Diego didn't have anything better.

The clicking of heels on the floor had Diego turning his head, and he saw Grace walking around. Like he hadn't pulled her wires out a few days ago. He put his end of Five down on the floor (gently, thank you) and ignored Allison calling his name to approach Grace.

"Mom?"

Grace

Grace greeted him with a warm smile. "Hello, Diego dear."

Diego

"What..." Diego reached out to take Grace by the forearm and turned it. There were stitches where someone had clearly put Grace back together. "How are you still walking around?"

Grace

"One foot in front of the other," she teased. "Why, how do you do it?"

Diego

Mom had been the one to patch up their scrapes when they were young, so it was nothing for her to remove some shrapnel now. They had carried Five up to his room, and Grace quickly went to work making sure Five wouldn't bleed out.

Somehow Dolores had made her way to the chair next to Five's bed and Diego wasn't even going to ask about that.

Allison had been off trying to track anyone down, but the look on her face when she returned told him she had been unsuccessful. Still-- "Anything?"

Allison

Allison shook her head. "There's no answer at Vanya's place, and the receptionist at her music school said Vanya was a no-show for her lessons today."

"Hey, are you okay?" she asked. Diego looked kind of...pensive. Which was not normal.

Diego

"Yeah," he said, tearing his gaze away from where Grace was tending to Five. "It's just surreal seeing her. I just want to tell her I'm...whatever, we don't have enough time, we gotta go."

Allison

"I don't know, Diego," Allison said. "Five is lying there, unconscious. We need him."

As much as she hated to admit it, he seemed to be the only one who had any clue what was going on.

Diego

"We can do this ourselves." Somewhere Vanya was out there with some psychopath, he wasn't about to sit here and do nothing.

Allison

"We tried that already, remember? We all ended up dead," she said. "I don't know, I'm just...I'm thinking I should see Claire before..."

Before they all died a horrific death.

Diego

No, that was not happening. If Allison did that, then Diego would have to see Annie, and they were not at the point of saying goodbye yet, damn it. There was still time. "You can't run away from this, Allison. That's what started this whole mess in the first place. Luther was right--"

Allison

Allison's eyes widened. "Didn't think I'd ever hear you say those words."

Diego

Diego shrugged his shoulder. Never mention this again, Allison. "Well, we've got to stick together."

Allison

Allison nodded. She still desperately wanted to talk to her daughter, but it could wait. "Where do we start?"

Diego

"There's no other addresses on file, but there is another relation listed," he said. "Jenkins' grandmother, lives on Jackpine Road."

Allison

"You think he took her there?" It sounded pretty thin, but it was all they had.

Diego

"I think it's a good place to start." Because, yes, they had nothing else.

Diego and Allison hadn't even hit the sidewalk when Diego noticed the cop cars. The sirens weren't on yet, but they would be.

"Nope, this way," he said, grabbing Allison's arm and turning her the other way.

Allison

"What?" Allison asked. "The car's back there."

Diego

"Trust me, okay, come on." And that's when the red and blue lights started going off. Great.

Allison

"What is going on?" Allison asked, turning to look at the approaching cop cars.

Diego

"They're here for me," Diego said, pulling his phone out of his pocket. "They think I tried to murder someone."

Allison

"Did you?" Like, if any of her siblings was going to murder someone...well, it'd be Five, but he was unconscious and Diego was the next best bet.

Diego

"No, no of course not," Diego said, looking insulted. "Why would you ask me that?"

Allison

"I mean, you do carry knives with you everywhere," Allison pointed out. She jumped slightly when the sirens started going off.

Diego

"Shit. We're going to have to split." Diego shoved his phone in Allison's hand. If anyone could figure out how to work a cell phone quickly, it'd be her. "Call Annie. She can get here fast and go with you."

Allison

"Diego--" What happened to sticking together? "I can handle this myself, you know."

Diego

"I know," he said, looking back. Okay, they had officially run out of time. "Just as a favor to me, okay? Don't go alone. Now, go."

Allison

Allison nodded, already backing away. "Don't do anything stupid."

And with that she turned to head down an alley before she could be seen with him.

Diego

Once Allison was out of sight Diego faced the cop cars, already putting a hand up. The other one was busy in a sling.

"Weapon on the ground, Diego," a cop--Chuck--said as he got out of the car. Diego recognized him, of course. He had worked pretty hard to be one of them after all.

Diego dropped the knife he hadn't even realized he had been holding. "Expected better from you, Chuck."

"Don't make this harder than it already is," the cop said, pulling Diego's arm out of the sling so he could cuff him. "Diego Hargreeves, you are under arrest on the suspicion..."
