Hargreeves Manson | Afternoon

The apocalypse was coming, Five had fucked off to the unknown, and they were having another family meeting. At least Allison had been nice enough to bring coffee. Once everyone had been settled (sans Vanya, whom nobody thought to invite since this was Umbrella Academy business), Luther took his spot as Number One and started the meeting.

"So, the world is going to end in three days."

Whelp, no beating around the bush.

Allison

"Three days?" God, she needed a drink that wasn't coffee.

Luther

Luther nodded, focusing on his coffee cup. "That's what Five said."

Klaus

"The old bastard did mention the apocalypse now that I think about it. He just left out the part about how soon." Of course Klaus hadn't asked any questions, which could be why Five didn't end up mentioning it.

Allison

"But can we trust him? I don't know if you've noticed, but Five's a little--" Allison whistled and twirled her finger by her head.

Klaus

"Our little psycho." Klaus was so proud.

Luther

"He was pretty convincing," Luther said. "If he wasn't trying to stop an apocalypse those lunatics wouldn't be chasing him."

Allison

"What did Five even see?" Allison asked.

Luther

"Uh, apparently we all fought together against who was responsible." That was enough explanation, right? Right. "Okay, so here's the plan, we go through Dad's research--"

Allison

"Wait, what?" No, that wasn't enough explanation! "Hold on--"

Diego

"What are you not telling us?" Diego asked. "Spit it out, big boy."

Of course Diego already knew Five saw them dead, but he had been given a half a year to get used to the idea, so he naturally thought Luther was talking about something else. Something more important than dying horribly, apparently

Luther

"We died." Is that what you wanted to hear, everybody? Sheesh.

Allison

"I'm sorry, what was that?"

Luther

"I said we died," Luther said, a little louder this time. "It's not just us. It's everybody on the planet."

Did that make it better?

Vanya

Vanya had brought Leonard over to introduce to the family. Annie meeting everyone had gone over pretty well, why should this be any different?

She looked a little surprised to see everybody already gathered together. "Hey, guys. What's going on?"

Allison

Allison opened her mouth to say something, but then noticed Leonard standing behind Vanya.

"It's a family matter." Immediately she knew that had been the wrong thing to say.

Vanya

"A family matter," Vanya repeated. "So you couldn't bother to include me?"

Luther

Luther stepped in, as was his habit. "No, it's not like that, we were--"

Vanya

"No, don't let me interrupt." It would be really easy to cry right now, but she wouldn't give them the satisfaction.

Allison

"I'll fill you in later," Allison promised, trying to relay with her eyes that this really wasn't the time for this discussion. "When we're alone."

Vanya

Vanya frowned. She knew Allison didn't like Leonard, but she was just going to have to deal with the fact that he was a part of her life. Or not. Vanya hadn't seen any of them for years; what would it matter to her to not see them again?

"Please don't bother," Vanya said. "And I won't either."

Allison

"Vanya, that's not fair." It's not like Diego's girlfriend had been allowed to sit in on family meetings, why would this guy be invited?

In the back of her head she knew it was a mistake to not invite Vanya here today, but she had convinced herself it was for Vanya's protection. Diego had been right the night they were attacked, Vanya could have died and they wouldn't have even known until it was too late.

Vanya

"Fair? There's nothing fair about being your sister," Vanya spat. "I've been left out of everything for as long as I can remember."

She squared her shoulders and made it clear that she was speaking too all of her siblings when she said this. "And I used to think it was Dad's fault, but he's dead. So it turns out you're the assholes."

Klaus

"Ouch," Klaus murmured as he watched Vanya and her boyfriend walk out. The boyfriend who was not cute, Vanya. Not cute at all.

Allison

Now Allison really felt terrible. "I'm gonna find Vanya and explain."

It wasn't you, Vanya, it was the end of the world. And your boyfriend gave everyone the creeps.

Luther

"No, wait, there isn't time," Luther said. "We have to figure out what's causing the apocalypse."

Despite all the training, that wasn't a sentence he thought he'd ever say.

"Now there are loads of possibilities. Nuclear war, asteroids. But I'm thinking this is about the moon, right? Dad must've sent me up there for a reason," Luther said. "I was giving him a daily updates about the conditions, sending field samples. The first thing we need to do is find his research--"

Klaus

"Hold the phone," Klaus said, holding up his hand. "Didn't you say we died the first time?"

Diego

"Klaus, shockingly, has a point," Diego said. "What gives us the win this time?"

Five

Was that Five's queue to appear on the bar top? Because that was what was happening now with a flash of electricity that was different from his normal teleporting.

Allison

Why was their family like this?

"Jesus!"

Klaus

"Guys, am I still high or do you see him too?" Or was he maybe dead. Because that would not be ideal either.

Luther

Chalk this up under "things Luther did not have time for". The world was ending, people!

"Five where have you been?" he asked.

Five

"Irrelevant," Five said, taking the cup of coffee from Allison because he needed it more after the day he'd had getting creeped on. Also, you couldn't make him tell you shit, Luther. "So the apocalypse is in three days. The only chance to save the world is, well, us."

God help them.

Luther

"The Umbrella Academy." He knew all that child abuse was for a reason! Suck it, everyone else!

Five

Luther. Luther. Bless your big, dumb heart.

"Yeah, but with me, obviously." This time around would be different. So if you all don't get your sideshow acts together and get over yourselves we're screwed."

You hear that? That's the beginning of a real Hargreeves pep talk there.

"Who cares if Dad messed us up? Are we going to let that define us? No."

Nailed it.

"And to give us a fighting chance to see next week, I've come back with a lead. I know who's responsible for the apocalypse. This is who we have to stop," he said, producing the orders that were meant to go to Hazel and Cha Cha.

Allison

Since he took her coffee, Allison took the slip of paper to read off, "Harold Jenkins?"

Diego

"Who the hell is Harold Jenkins?" He sounded geriatric.

No offense, Five.

Five

Rude.

"I don't know," Five admitted before following it up with a, "Yet. But I do know he's responsible for the apocalypse, so we have to find him and we have to do it now."

And someone preferably distracts Luther while Five kills Harold like a rabid dog getting put down.

Luther

"How is he connected to what's going to happen?" This better not be another gardener, goddammit.

Five

"I don't know," Five replied with that same implied 'yet' in there. Because they weren't smart enough for this to be a real feint back at the Commission.

Diego

"Wait, you just know his name?" Diego asked. "That's it?"

Five

"That's enough." He knew you worked off way less information than that, Diego. He'd met you!

Diego

Yeah, but he wasn't labeled as the smart one in the family!

"There's probably dozens of Jenkinses."

Five

"Well, we better start looking then!" Five said, rapidly losing his patience with his siblings. Which wasn't saying much.

Allison

"I'm sorry, am I the only one skeptical here?" Allison asked, looking from brother to brother for some support here. "I mean how exactly do you know all of this about what's his name?"

Harold Jenkins. The dumbest name ever.

Five

"Harold Jenkins," Five supplied without that great narrative addition. "You know those lunatics in masks that attacked the house?"

Klaus

"Oh yeah, I think I remember those guys." Was he being sarcastic? Was he just being Klaus? A little of both, really.

Diego

"Yeah, the ones that attacked us while you were getting drunk." Probably not the last time that would happen, let's all be real here.

Five

Shut up and finally get some answers out of your brother!

"Yeah, them," Five bit out. "They were sent by the Temps Commission to stop me from coming back and preventing the end of life on Earth."

Allison

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Honesty? In this family? It's less likely than you'd think.

"The Temps what?"

Five

"My former employer," Five said, just steamrolling on through this. "They monitor all time and space to make sure whatever is supposed to happen... happens. They believe the apocalypse is coming in three days. So I went to the Commission headquarters and intercepted a message that was meant for said lunatics."

He gestured over toward the slip of paper.

"'Protect Harold Jenkins'. So he must be responsible for the apocalypse."

Allison

"What do you mean, protect time and space?" Five, that wasn't giving them the answers they actually needed here! It was saying scary shit and just expecting everyone to deal with it.

Diego

"Where's Hazel, Five?" In case you all forgot, he had his own revenge side quest here.

Klaus

No one forgot about his brooding revenge. Wait, no. Scratch that. Klaus forgot. Because he was busy with his own stuff going on right now.

"My skin is on fire."

Mostly detox.

Allison

No, no, no. They weren't getting off topic here, damn it.

"Do you have any idea how insane this sounds?"

Five

"You know what else is insane?" Five asked, turning on her and her willful disbelief here. "I look like a 13 year old boy. Klaus talks to the dead, and Luther... Luther thinks he's fooling everybody with that overcoat. Everything about us is insane. It always has been."

Klaus

"He's got a point there," Klaus managed, following most of that pretty easily still.

Five

"We didn't choose this life, we're just living in it. For the next three days anyway."

That might have been the best motivational speech anyone in this family had ever given.

Allison

"But the last time we tried to stop it, we died," Allison said, sort of curling in on herself as everything sank in. "Why should this time be any different? Why shouldn't I go be with my daughter?"

See her one last time if it was all going to end anyway.

Five

"Because this time I'm here and we have the name of the man responsible." That had to be enough. It had to be. "Guys, we actually have the chance to save billions of people, including Claire."

He made sure to look Allison in the eye for that last part.

Allison

"You know her name?" That was actually a surprise, all things considered.

Five

Oh god, he was letting on just how much he cared about his family.

But, well, they had three days left if they messed this up, so. "I do, and I'd like to live long enough to meet her."

Allison

It was sweet. Almost made you forget he was a feral little shit.

"Alright," Allison said with a determined nod. "Let's get this bastard."

Diego

"You had me at Gerald Jenkins." Really, Diego did not have to be convinced to kill some random if it meant saving the world unlike some ape people he could name.

Five

"Harold Jenkins," Five corrected, immediately regretting his faith in his family.

Diego

"Whatever." Both names were stupid. "I've already lost people this week, I'm not losing any more."

Five

"And Luther?" Even if he would get all weird about the murder thing.

Luther

"Yeah, you go," Luther said distractedly. "I'm gonna stay and go through Dad's files. I still think this has something to do with why he sent me to the moon."

Diego

What the hell was up with this dude and the moon?

"Seriously? Now you want to make the end of the world about you and Dad?" Typical.

Luther

"No, 'watch out for threats' that's what he told me," he said. "You think that's a coincidence? It all must be connected somehow."

It's not like his father would have sent him to the moon for four years for no damn reason, sheesh.

Allison

Yes. Of course not. Dad would never do something like that.

"No, we should all stick together." You know. As a family who didn't have romantic feelings going for them. At all.

Five

"We don't have time for this," Five snapped. Because it was literally a countdown timer now.

Diego

"Whatever, let's roll, I know how we can find this asshole," Diego said. "Klaus, you're with me."

Look, they had made a good team during the ice cream truck thing, okay?

Klaus

Hadn't Diego gotten shot there? Never mind.

"Yeah, I'm good. I think I'll... I'll pass. I'm feeling a little under the weather."

Which was code for going to puke his guts out and probably hallucinate some. Very clever code.
